"Henshaws was agent for Department"

By Paul Mooney

Farmers whose cattle were slaughtered in Henshaws just before the company ceased operations were boosted by developments at last week's meeting of creditors of the Navan based firm.

P Henshaw Ltd was acting as an agent for the Department of Agriculture when it slaughtered reactor cattle, the meeting was told by solicitor Willie Day of Arthur Cox Solicitors who chaired the meeting on behalf of the company liquidator.

A statement of affairs given out to creditors at the meeting indicated that the £201,000 owed in payment for reactor cattle was owed to the Department rather than to individual farmers.

Following the meeting IFA president Tom Parlon said it was now clear that the Department must pay the 192 farmers whose cattle were slaughtered by the company. "IFA has already taken the matter to the Department on behalf of the farmers and will insist it pays the £201,000 in full," he said.

Also according to the documents given out at the meeting B and F Meats in County Kilkenny are owed £87,000 by Henshaws.

Liffey Meats (Cavan) Ltd is owed some £4,300. Monery By-Products is owed £4,900 and Premier Proteins £36,600. The total deficiency in the firm is shown at £460,000, including what is owed for cattle.
