Pig market summary

Pig prices reported to IFA

Week-commencing 17/09/07

Glanbia 1.40c/kg - 1.47c/kg

Dawn 1.44c/kg - 1.46c/kg

Pork Sltrs. 1.42c/kg - 1.47c/kg

Comment:

IFA Pigs Committee Chairman Michael Maguire said that it was disappointing that the 4c/kg increase from Dawn was not followed by rises from the pork plants and Glanbia this week. Irish pig producers are under severe pressure losing between €7 and €15 per pig considering current feed prices. This situation is not sustainable. The processors must take responsibility for the industry and recoup these dramatic production price increases from the market. Throughput is now 17,000 pigs lower that it was at the same time last year. Ireland last week reached 93% of the EU market
