Farm Management

Sheep - Repeat offenders

Ewes continuously giving problems at lambing should be identified for culling. Make sure you have an adequate system that will allow you to identify these ewes at weaning. Daughters from problem ewes should not be kept for breeding as many of the problems may be hereditary. You will face enough problems at lambing without breeding more. All lambs born after mid march should be castrated. The simplest way to castrate and detail lambs is to use rubber rings.

Profit Monitor

How did you perform in 2007? What was your gross margin per ha? How much of your single farm payment did you hold onto? This is essential information all beef and sheep farmers now require in order to assess the financial viability of their businesses and it can be simply obtained by spending a few hours completing the Teagasc profit monitor program.
