Judging at the Royal Scottish Highland Show in Islington, Scotland got underway at 9am on Thursday 18 June and the quality of stock on display did not disappoint.

The Aberdeen Angus breed took all the high honours this year, Thursday saw Alistair and Graeme Fraser’s 2010 born Shadwell Black Broughton K48 crowned supreme Aberdeen Angus champion, with the partnership of W & D McLaren & Highland Wagyu taking reserve breed champion with their junior cow Netherton Evita N734. On Friday Black Broughton partnered with Haughton Justine Erica L012 to take the interbreed pairs competition. On Saturday the Angus breed claimed the Interbreed team of four and the icing on the cake was when Shadwell Black Broughton K48 went one better and took over-all interbreed champion of show for the Idvies Herd.

Supreme Charolais championship went the way of the Balthayock herd with their 2013 born bull Balthayock Imp, himself a Blelack Forrester son from the home bred Balthayock Christine. Reserve champion went the way of Glenericht Hester for W K & P Drysdale, this 2012 born cow is by Moyness Saltire and out of Balmullo Tina. Balthayock Imp paired with Glenerich Hester on Friday morning to take the reserve interbreed pairs champion. Then went one better on Saturday firstly taking the junior interbreed champion, then following on stood reserve over-all interbreed champion of the show to the Aberdeen Angus bull.

In the Saler’s ring, honours here went to NI breeder John and Ernest Elliot following on from a successful Balmoral, his four year old cow Drumlegagh Elise took the supreme championship, standing in reserve to her was a February 2012 born cow Seamore Heffalump for D M Lyle and sons.

Supreme champion Simmental was awarded to the southern Irish bred Auroch Eve. Purchased at just four hours old by the Barlow Brothers from Co Dublin breeder David Wall, she has enjoyed a successful show career to date, winning stars of the future champion as a baby to claiming the supreme Simmental championship here at the Highland. In reserve was Gerald and Morag Smiths 2008 born senior bull Grange wood William, herd sire of their Drumsleed herd Perthshire.

Foxhill Farm Limousin’s are no strangers to wining and Thursday was no different, the Alford Family did the double taking both champion and reserve with their home bred Bull Foxhill Farm Jasper and Heifer Foxhill Farm Ivy, both from the prolific cow Bankdale Alice. Foxhill Farm Jasper went one better on Saturday being placed Reserve Junior Interbreed Champion to the Charolais Bull. Jasper sold at Carlisle in May of this year for 35,00gns to the Whinfell park herd.

The Hereford Championship was won by Heather Whittaker’s Sky High 1 Korker, sired by Dorepoll 1 93N Nationwide, dam here was out of Romany 1 Ishbel A84. The reserve went to Romany 1 Plum A84, a Baybridge 1 Atlas daughter out of Romany 1 Plum 41H for Wilson and sons.

The British Blonde section saw more success for Northern Ireland, following on from her championship win at Balmoral William McElroy’s Doncombe Aga Khan sired cow Ivaniskey Denise with her February born calf Limited Edition at foot took the Blonde championship. Lyle Laird & sons took reserve with the 2010 born Whitefield Freya sired by Whiskey Dollar.

Two year old Alvie Lovely Gael (P), a Glenisla Zinzan (P) daughter took the Supreme Beef Shorthorn title. Chapelton Winsome son Coldrochie Hattrick stood in reserve.

Champion Galloway to J & S Ross with Beauty C1437 of Romesbeoch, Reserve D& R Cornthwaite’s bull Troloss Impeccable

British Blues Champion went the way of the February 2014 born Solway View Jackpot for the Dumfries & Galloway based herd.

And finally the breed most synonymous with the show, the Highland cattle, Over-all champion here went the way of Banrigh 3rd of Hyndford, an April 2012 heifer bred by Hyndford Fold, and reserve to the black bull.

Dairy judging took place on the Friday morning and champions in this section went to the following:

  • Holstein champion and interbreed dairy champion was Parkend Sanchez Tamara VG89 from Brian Weatherup
  • Jersey champion and interbreed dairy champion belonged to Hew Howie and Wilma Benson’s Wellhouse Festival Spry a good start to a cow on her first show day out
  • Milk Shorthorn champion was James Robinson’s second calved Strickley Barrington Dot 21
  • Red & White section champion was Arthur and Susan Lawrie’s second calver Cuthill Towers Classic Ellie
  • Aryshire champion went to the Lawrie family’s Brieryside Executive Sparky 7
