APPRECIATION

--------------------------------

A true pathfinder of Irish show jumping, Sgt Major Steve Hickey passed away aged 90 during the week and was buried at Glasnevin on Monday last. A colossus of the sport here, he bridged the gap between course building in Ireland and that on the continent for over three decades.

As sergeant major with the Army Equitation School, he not only looked after the horses on trips abroad but also intensively researched the courses they jumped.

He learned from people like Hans Brinckmann in Germany and brought his knowledge to bear on courses at McKee and then at shows all around Ireland. There is not a county here that he and loving wife and companion Nora did not travel to and were welcomed by local committees as prized guests of their shows.

Steve’s favourite party piece was Dan McGrew and at many happy after-show gatherings he would make his unique contribution.

In 2003, Steve was given the Irish Show Jumping Hall of Fame Award. His positive and generous influence on the sport here will last long.

To Nora and all of their seven children, our heartfelt condolences. He will always be remembered as the Sergeant Major. MS
