61 acres sold in Meadstown, Co Meath

Earlier in the month, Raymond Potterton Auctioneers sold a farm at Meadstown, Dunderry, Co Meath.

Bidding for the 61-acre farm had opened at €400,000 and between three active bidders the price increased steadily before it was sold under the hammer for €500,000 (€8,197/ac) to a farmer from outside the area.

The farm at Meadstown comprises an old two-storey farmhouse in good structural order but in need of some upgrading, as well as two farmyards with excellent cattle handling facilities. It is accessed via a short avenue from the main road.

A 30-acre parcel of land at Curtistown, Kilmessan, Co Meath, that Potterton also offered for sale by auction was not sold. The land was bid as far as €250,000 before it was withdrawn. According to Potterton, negotiations for the farm are at an advanced stage, with a deal likely to be struck this week.

The land at Curtistown is all in grass, well fenced and laid out in three good sized divisions.

90-acre Meath farm sold in private deal

Last week, Smith Harrington Auctioneers, Navan, offered a 90-acre residential farm at Lismullen, Tara, Co Meath, for sale by public auction.

The farm was offered in two separate lots first time round. Lot one comprised a modern four-bedroom bungalow and 0.5 acres and received no bids.

The second lot extended to 89.5 acres and the farmyard, including a three-bay lean-to hay shed, open silage pit, a four-bay hay shed with lean-to as well as a number of sheep handling pens. Lot two was bid as far as €700,000.

Auctioneer John Harrington then offered the farm in its entire and immediately received a bid of €800,000 and between four active bidders it was bid as far as €1m before being withdrawn.

Harrington then entered negotiations with the highest bidder and sold the farm privately for a higher sum. It is believed that the buyer is a Co Meath farmer.

The land at Lismullen is all in one block, laid out in nine good sized divisions and currently under grass.

Moyne House and farm withdrawn after a bid of €1.2m

Moyne House and farm, situated outside Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, was withdrawn from auction earlier this month after it was bid to its guide of €1.2m.

The 145-acre farm comprises a three-storey farmhouse, a working farmyard including an eight-bay double hay barn, a separate four-bay shed with double lean-to, accommodation for 200 head of cattle, a concrete yard, silage pit, cattle handling facilities and various store sheds.

A large crowd turned out at the Riverside Hotel, Enniscorthy, for the auction that was handled by Ganly Walters, Dublin. Although the farm reached its guide of €1.2m, it was withdrawn and private negotiations are said to be ongoing.

Irish Country Living understands that two local farmers battled it out for the farm which belonged to the late John Nolan, a local greyhound trainer who famously won the Irish Derby in 1976 with his greyhound Táin Mór.
