First on the catalogue were newcomers to the show, the Belted Galloway breed. Champion went to Michael and Oliver Flanagan with their senior heifer Castlemartin Happy Days.

Honours again went to the Flanagan’s in the Irish Angus ring with the September 2014 born Ballyshannon Eric daughter Moydrum Lu Lu, out of the home bred dam Moydrum Heather. Kerins Kemi was the reserve champion for Bernard Kerins of Co Sligo, following on from her successful outing at Cork Show last weekend where she was reserve all-Ireland champion.

Noel Dowd with Creaga Gipsy was Beef Shorthorn Champion, this four year old cow was shown with her first prize winning heifer calf Crega Lacy at foot. Reserve went to the Co Clare based Rowanberry Herd of Shane and Frances Brigdale with their 2014 born heifer.

In the last of the traditional breeds, Hereford champion was claimed by local man Padraig Farrell with his eleven month old Cave Hill General 2. Reserve went to Padraig McGrath Cloonshanagh herd of Co Roscommon.

One of the first continental breeds in to the show ring were the Limousin, Bobby O’Connell of Co Limerick took the over-all here with Roundhill Iondine, a heifer he purchased at the Roundhill production sale of Timothy & Doreen Corridan. Reserve went to the well known Moloney family of Co Clare, with their autumn born heifer calf, Ardnacrusha Jasmine.

Charolais champion went the way of Thurles man Martin Ryan, with his home bred cow Goldstar Elle, while reserve champion was awarded to Martin Clyne’s junior heifer. Winner of the Charolais young stock person class was Jonathan Moloney of Ardnacrusha Co Clare.

Champion Simmental went to the Neenan brothers of Ballyhaunis with their junior cow Fearna Destiny with her Anatrim Bodybuilder heifer calf at foot. Reserve champion went to the junior heifer class winner Fearna Faith, also bred by the Neenan brother’s but this time shown by owner Martin Mooney of Co Offaly,

Athlone show always proves a strong hold for commercial cattle and Sunday was no different with no less than three All-Ireland titles up for grabs.

Winner of the Allied Irish Bank €500 All-Ireland Baby Beef Champion was George Hagarty of Co Longford.

Winner of the Kepak €1,000 All-Ireland Super Beef Heifer Championship went to the Maxwell brothers with their black heifer Midnight Express.

Winner of the Michael Moore Car sales €1,000 All-Ireland Super Beef Bullock Championship was Co Clare native Pat Rosengrave with his Charolais cross bullock.

Over-all commercial champion went to the Maxwell Brothers black heifer, Midnight Express, with Marie McCormack of Co Westmeath taking up the reserve over-all spot with her Belgium Blue baby heifer calf.

One of the last classes of the day was the commercial exhibitor’s young stockperson class, which was won by Owen Hester, Co Roscommon.
