Fodder-stretched farmers in the west and northwest will be able to avail of a fodder transport subsidy by the end of the week.

The subsidy works out at €12 for standard sized bales of silage or haylage and €8/bale for straw or hay. Farmers will still pay the cost of the fodder in the normal way and the transport subsidy only applies if a farmer is hauling bales from over 100km away.

Farmers who have identified a shortage by completing a fodder budget with their agricultural adviser will be eligible for the subsidy.

To get the payment, the Irish Farmers Journal understands the farmer must produce a receipt from the haulage company for the transport cost.

Launching the scheme, Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed said application forms would be available later this week. “As fodder is traded between farms on a regular basis, it is essential that the support measure is targeted at those who most need it and does not impact on the normal functioning of the market for fodder,” he said.
