New land mobility concepts are receiving greater acceptance all the time, with all sectors seeing the benefits.

Land mobility is providing real farming opportunities for young people who want to farm. It is also providing realistic options for farmers and farm families who want to step back.

Experiences have been positive, with many successful arrangements in place and more in the pipeline. The types of arrangement include:

  • Long-term leases, which can be very tax efficient for landowners.
  • Partnerships, which are particularly beneficial within the family as part of succession planning and providing access to young farmer schemes.
  • Share-farming, which is providing excellent entry opportunities for young farmers.
  • Contract-rearing and other arrangements.
  • Farmer age profile concerns and ensuring opportunities exist for young trained farmers is not just an Irish dilemma, it is an issue all across Europe and is certain to receive special focus under CAP 2020.

At the recent AIB Progression in Farming seminar, the importance of building your farm business or a collaborative arrangement on the basis of sustainability was highlighted. A sustainable, realistic and fair arrangement is essential for all parties.
