Farmers may wish to step back for any number of reasons. Many will have genuine concerns over income security, basic payment scheme (BPS) details, or how the farm will be cared for if they are not part of the management team. Options and templates now exist to deal with these concerns. Within the family, a family farm partnership is an excellent option. Outside the family, leasing and share farming are both working very well. Leasing is very tax-efficient, whereas share-farming allows the farmer stay more involved.

Having operated a mixed farm for more than 40 years, John Kehoe in Carlow looked at his options last year. He felt it was time to step back and identify a suitable collaborator. He entered into a long-term lease. The farm is being well maintained and enhanced, his Basic Farm Payment payment has been safeguarded, and he is receiving a fair return for the land which is income tax-free.

Many farmers are locked into low-margin enterprises, in the past because of quotas, but now more because of lack of expertise or infrastructure. Rather than trying to go alone, templates now exist to link in with the necessary expertise. The final arrangement type (lease, sharing, or partnership) is less important than the farm plan and the principal of working together. The final arrangement or legal structure will be what works best for the farm and the parties involved.

Having being frustrated by many years of low margins from beef and tillage, especially since the demise of sugar beet, Pat Butler in Wexford looked at getting into dairying. Pat had a nice block of land, plenty of sheds and slurry storage, and a love for farming. Pat understood that he did not have dairy expertise and that investment would be required in grazing infrastructure and milking equipment. Pat looked at his options and identified someone he could work with to develop a dairy partnership. Together they now operate a successful dairy business that has enhanced the farm and is delivering a better return.

The Land Mobility Service helped facilitate these arrangements.
