The Beef Plan Movement has brought forward plans to extend the deadline for its national elections from today, 15 January to Friday, 14 February.

At the Meath Beef Plan AGM, the birthplace of the organisation, a motion was passed to amend the rules of governance to facilitate elections in all other counties where they have not yet been held.

The motion read:

Newly elected members of the National Committee must meet this Thursday or Friday night with the directors of Beef Plan and agree under rule 37(x) to consult with the directors of Beef Plan to change the following:

  • 1. Rule 7(v) to allow for the extension of time to conduct the outstanding county AGMs to Friday 14 February 2020.
  • 2. Rule 15(1) to have a national AGM no later than 15 March 2020.
  • 3. Add to each rule that all members registered up to 31 December 2019, will be allowed to run in and vote in these elections.
  • Olive branch

The motion was proposed by Beef Plan co-chair Hugh Doyle who said it was “an olive branch” to counties who felt they had been hard done by.

Under the rules of governance counties had to announce AGMs 21 days before they took place, but only nine to 10 counties met this requirement. Doyle said the rule change would allow all counties to hold elections.

The Beef Plan’s national elections have been dogged by controversy following a split between the organisations co-chairs, Hugh Doyle and Eamon Corley, and its former national committee.

Chaotic scenes last week led to the Galway AGM being abandoned and Gardaí were called to the Tipperary AGM on Friday night.

    Meath election

The Meath AGM was carried out without incident, although security was present on the night and members were required to verify their identity. The secretary’s report said there are over 450 registered members in Meath, with 59 of those in attendance to cast their votes.

Eamon Corley was elected as Meath Beef Plan chair unopposed. Hugh Doyle, having initially declined to contest any position, was unanimously proposed by the floor for the position of vice-chair.

    The other officers elected were:

  • Secretary: Paul Fitzpatrick.
  • Assistant secretary: John Jordan.
  • Treasurer: Aidan Maguire.
  • PRO: Johnny Kiely.
