Almost 4,000 primary school children from 1,500 families took part in Agri Aware’s Incredible Edibles family challenge, which was launched this year in place of the usual school-based programme.

With schools closed, the project was opened up to parents to aid home learning.

Incredible Edibles aims to educate primary school pupils on where food comes from, the value of farming and how to make smart, healthy eating choices.

Agri Aware chair Alan Jagoe said the initiative has been hugely successful in schools over the past number of years and the response from families at home has been “amazing”.

“There are videos up on social media and to see the work kids and their families put in at home, I would go so far as to say it is inspirational to see.

“Kids are really involved in wanting to know about food, where it is coming from and how to grow that food,” he said.

The family challenge asked children to carry out five tasks at home. This included planting, reusing materials, learning facts and completing worksheets.

Food origin and farming

Alan highlighted the importance of Incredible Edibles and the role it plays in connecting future consumers to farming and food origin.

“It is fantastic that people are out there learning, growing, getting their hands dirty and understanding food and where it comes from.

“That there is a whole industry and there is a huge number of people employed in Ireland in this industry is really what we want to get across in this as well,” he added.
