UK farmers are growing three times the area of Maris Piper than the next most popular variety, according to figures from AHDB. Meanwhile, new varieties are growing in popularity, as retailer contracts become more prevalent. Nectar and Melody have seen the greatest increase in planting area, growing by 1,000ha and 700ha respectively. Less popular varieties include Estima, which has decreased in area by an estimated 400ha this season.

Potatoes destined for the fresh retail and processing sectors account for an estimated 38% and 29% respectively of the total planted area in Great Britain.
