Designed and built in Massey Ferguson’s Beauvais facility in France, the new 100hp MF 5710 and 110hp MF 5711 tractors complement the 75hp to 95hp MF 4700 Global series tractors launched last year. Together, these new introductions underline Massey Ferguson’s significant investment in developing a completely new range of modern, straightforward and versatile tractors.

“Like the 4700 series which was launched last year, the 5700 series are the only tractors purpose-built in the 21st century specifically for this power bracket,” explains UK and Ireland sales manager William Judge.

This tractor range is as close as can be got to the original four-cylinder dynamo in the 390 and 390T models that are still working on many farms.

The MF 5711 at 110hp is big enough for mixed farms. The tractor should be more than capable of hauling a decent size tanker of around 2,000 gallons and a 10ft mower.

The engine

Both of the tractors are powered by the latest 4.4-litre four-cylinder AGCO Power engines which meet the Stage IV/Tier 4 Final emission regulations using the latest all-in-one emission system.

This allows the AdBlue to swirl in the filter and mix with the engine emissions to convert it into harmless gas and water. Fitted neatly under the steps, it is the same system using the Donaldson DEF filter as found on the MF 6700.

Massey Ferguson believes that the tractor is more efficient on AdBlue use than any other in its class. The 5700 series is fitted with a 153l fuel tank and an 18l AdBlue Tank. The crack out of the engine could actually remind some people of some of the classic four-cylinder engines of the 1990s era.

Transmission

The transmission is not overly complicated, as is the theme of the whole tractor, keeping costs down. The 12x12 transmission features two ranges and six synchromesh gears. The gear levers are located, to the right of the driver, just comfortable enough for the short-armed operator.

The 5700 series comes with a mechanical shuttle as standard with hydraulic activation; for farmers the electric power shuttle lever is an option. This option also allows the operator to set the aggressiveness of the directional changes.

The rear axle on the 5700 is the same as on the 5600 range of tractors and bigger than the 4700 Global series.

It is equipped with onboard reduction units and oil-immersed brakes. Massey says the 5700 will have a similar draft output as found on the 5600 also. Four-wheel-drive engagement is achieved by using a wet multiplate clutch; again Massey Ferguson says this is smoother than some cheaper alternatives.

Hydraulic system

A new hydraulic system, developed specifically for the Global tractor range, supplies the flow and power required to operate most implements.

For those requiring extra flow – to boost loader performance – the 5700 series can be specified with a 100l/min combined flow system.

This optional extra sees a 58l/min pump supplying rear linkage and 42l/min pump at 200 bar pressure supplying the spool valves, which combine to supply 100l/min for loader work.

At the backend, the lift capacity is capable of lifting 4,300kg at the ball ends on a CAT 2 linkage. Operated by Massey Ferguson’s electronic linkage control, which has been around for some time now, the lift is fitted with twin assistor rams as standard.

The 58l/min pump is fitted as standard, with a 33l/min auxiliary pump for the steering, differential, four-wheel-drive and power-shuttle where fitted. A two-speed 540/540E rpm is fitted as standard, with control by a modern independent PTO (IPTO) clutch, while electro-hydraulic operation eases the engagement and protects the driveline, according to Massey Ferguson.

There is the option of a 540/1,000rpm speed PTO or a 540/540Eco/1,000rpm PTO.

Massey Ferguson says operators benefit from the largest cab in the sector. Designed and built in Beauvais, the air-conditioned cab is equipped with a passenger seat and an adjustable telescopic steering column. The big change over the 4700 Global series is the flat floor, which allows easier access. All the controls are functional and well laid out for the operator.

The MF 5710 and 5711 are fully compatible with the Massey Ferguson 900 and Massey Ferguson 900X loader ranges. Incidentally, all of the loaders are built by the ALO Group for Massey Ferguson. For a farmer buying the Global series, the upgrade to the combined hydraulics and powershuttle is probably a good idea to get the most out of the tractor.

Pricewise, Massey is pitching this tractor at an entry price of €48,000 plus VAT (£40,000 for the UK) for the 100hp 5710. The larger 5711 at 110hp is €50,698 or £43,324. The tractor is available for order now, with delivery expected in the second quarter of the year.
