Snow has been reported in Longford, Donegal, Cavan, Cork, Galway and Mayo after temperatures dropped to zero last night.

Snow accumulations are possible today, especially in parts of the west and north. Thunder showers are also expected in parts of the country. Temperatures will reach highs of only 3 to 6C, with strong and gusty southwesterly winds.

However temperatures are expected to pick up later this week. Highs of 11C are forecast for Friday.

Farmers are asked to be conscious of health and safety during this spell of freezing weather. Those based in higher areas in risk of a heavy snowstorm should be aware of where animals are located.

The weather warning is in place until tonight at 9pm.
