The Farm: We’ve a dairy farm with 70 cows on more than 100 acres. We’ve a mix of Holstein and British Friesian cows. We normally calve in early February for about six weeks. We keep the heifers and sell the bulls after three weeks. The Friesian bulls go to mid-Kerry Mart in Milltown.

Sheep: We also run 137 sheep – all Scottish Blackface rams. They are born on the mountain and we buy them in Kenmare or Caherciveen mart. They spend the winter on the farm outdoors. We sell in March and thankfully when they leave the grass is very thick.

My pet: I’ve a pet calf (pictured) called Muirnín. She’d a hard calving and was very weak so I took particular care of her. She now follows me around like a dog!

The difficulties: Lack of money! There wasn’t much money in milk last year but it is improving now.

My family: I’ve one sister Niamh (15) who doesn’t do too much work on the farm. My Mam and Dad are very busy on the farm. Normally, my Mam milks and Dad feeds the cattle. I look after the sheep and calves.

My interests: I’ve a big interest in Irish. I don’t know why, maybe because of heritage. My Mam is from Valentia and her whole family have Irish so I suppose I picked up a few words. Irish is very handy in school! I also really like rowing and am a member of the Caladh na Feirse rowing club near Killorglin.

Irish language: I hope it survives into the future. There is something special about our language and culture. It’s a difficult question though to know what the future holds and I’m only doing the Leaving Cert!

Quotable quote: I really like the Irish Farmers Journal. My Grandad won a Land Rover from the Journal in the 1980s! I wasn’t around at that stage though!
