Paschal Hennessy, a well-known member of the Bayer CropScience team in Ireland, passed away last Saturday 11 April 2015, following a short illness.

His passing was peaceful, with his family in attendance at Aut Even Hospital, Kilkenny.

Paschal hailed from Ballycranna, Galbally, Co Tipperary, where he grew up on a dairy farm and was always immersed in agriculture.

He was educated at the CBS in Tipperary town (The Abbey) and graduated from UCD with a BAgrSC in 1977.

He began his career in the agrochemical business as a sales representative with what was then May & Baker Agrochemicals and progressed to sales manager in Rhone-Poulenc Agriculture during a period of considerable rationalisation within the sector.

The advent of Aventis and Bayer CropScience saw him take on a technical and marketing role.

In his 37 years in the business, Paschal represented those companies in the Animal & Plant Health Association (APHA) – which he chaired on two occasions. He was also a long and respected member of the Agricultural Science Association (ASA).

He loved sport, was an avid golfer and a member of the Carlow Golf Club. He was also a social walker.

The GAA remained very important for Paschal, with a fondness for football and a passion for hurling.

For the past number of years he was treasurer of his neighbouring Palatine GAA club in Carlow. He also loved a day at the races.

Paschal also loved politics and his support for Fine Gael knew no bounds. He was a regular canvasser for local, national and European elections.

From a professional perspective, Paschal was well-known and highly respected by farmers and professionals alike.

He dealt with many technical queries from both merchants and growers over the years and did so professionally, using his wide knowledge and experience.

Often referred to as the grandfather of the Irish agrochemical business, Paschal was a kind and gentle person, quick to compliment but slow to accept praise. He will be missed.

Our sympathies go in particular to his wife Mary and two sons, Hugh and Peter, but also to his brothers, Willie and Tom, and his sisters, Bridget, Catherine and Liz, and all his extended family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
