Last weekend saw significant difference in rainfall between the different regions. The south and southeast measured about 23mm (just less than an inch) while almost twice that (40mm plus) fell in the northeast and midlands. Rain swept in the east coast on Sunday and drifted upwards as it crossed the country. The impact on grazing conditions was significant, with many drystock farmers deciding to house cattle and dairy farmers on heavy land keeping stock in from grazing.

The rain has lifted growth rates considerably because rain was probably needed on some dry farms (see Grass+,

Advice for those on heavy land:

  • House stock if any damage to land is taking place.
  • Bring cows in off land and let them out for grazing once rain has stopped.
  • Block graze rather than strip graze to limit stock walking.
  • Protect grass ahead of stock by fencing off heavy covers.
