The north and the northwest of the country are particularly at risk of snow, with accumulations of 3cm possible.

However the Farmers Journal's resident weather expert, Andy Doyle, said that we shouldn't expect severe snow.

"There won't be a large volume of snow," he said. "Farmers with sheep in hilly areas may be at risk, but those in lowland areas shouldn't be worried.

"Depending on the winds, snow will not accumulate in most areas."

Wind

Gale force winds are also expected. Southwest to west winds will reach speeds of between 50 and 65 km/h with gusts between 90 and 110 km/h during Wednesday. The west and northwest coast will be worst hit by these winds.

Sleet, snow showers and gusty winds are forecast tonight with some moderate snow across the country and lowest temperatures -1 to +2C.

It will be cold and windy again tomorrow, with highest temperatures of 4 to 7 and strong northwest winds.
