A status yellow rainfall warning has been issued for a number of counties in the west and northwest.

Between 25mm and 40mm of rain is forecast to fall in counties Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo over the next 24 hours.

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow rainfall warning for these counties, as heavy rain with locally thundery bursts are forecast to develop today.

This rain will turn more showery on Tuesday night and on Wednesday, resulting in up to 40mm in parts.

Meanwhile, a status yellow wind warning is in place for Munster, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Galway until midnight on Tuesday.

A deepening depression, called Storm Aileen, is expected to track eastwards across the centre of Ireland (Galway to Dublin) on Tuesday evening.

Very strong winds are forecast on the storm’s southern and western flanks, which will affect counties of the southwest, south and parts of the east coast later.

Southwest to west winds are expected to increase to mean speed of 50km/h to 65km/h, with gusts of 90km/h to 110km/h on Tuesday afternoon in coastal counties of the southwest and south, with the severe winds becoming northwesterly and transferring to parts of the east coast later this evening or early tonight.

Winds will be at their strongest in exposed coastal areas, Met Éireann has said.
