The straw market remains strong as the winter barley harvest progresses.

Empty sheds meant early demand was guaranteed, with fields cleared of straw almost as soon as the combine leaves.

Doubts about the straw volume of spring barley crops have maintained the vigorous market, with the arrival of Bord na Móna contracts for 60,000t of straw for the Edenderry biomass plant.

Winter oaten straw is being accepted for mushroom composting, with prices up by €3/8x4x3 square bale on last year. Typically, straw prices are up by €2/bale around the country, meaning a floor of €10 in Wexford, €13 in Laois/Cork and €15 in Tipperary/Galway/Meath/Donegal for 4x4 round bales.

Floating trade is about €2/ bale above this price.

Unbaled is being sold on a per-bale rather than a per-acre basis, as yields are variable.

Weighing of bales is recommended to establish an average weight and price.
