Peter Lynch – Donegal

“The scheme will be welcomed by all, we’re a long time waiting for it. It’s badly needed. There has been a lot of work done on it behind the scenes and so it’s good to see.”

The €15,000 available should heal a lot of the wounds

“It was one of those years that you want to forget, you were going in cutting at higher moisture just to get it done. The €15,000 available should heal a lot of the wounds that were left.

“One of the good things too is that beef and dairy farmers are behind it, they need us too. Nobody likes to see imported grain coming into the country.

“We’re only a small island and we’re all just trying to make a few pound to live. If in a years’ time the beef men, or the dairy men need help then I hope the tillage men will stand behind them.”

David O’Brien – West Cork

“We’re right on the coast here in West Cork and it was a nightmare harvest, an absolute nightmare. The scheme is very welcome, but it’s only welcome if the terms are practical and functional for the farmers who had serious losses.

“There are still a lot of issues in the details (of the scheme) and how the figures will be calculated. It will be alright for the farmers trading 100% with a feed merchant, but for those who is trading a bit from farm to farm or who are home feeding themselves where it could be more difficult.

“The scheme will have to be accommodating for all the farmers who had serious losses.”

Mervyn Auchmuty – Roscommon

“The actual workload that was put on last year, both physically and mentally was tough. The crops were stuck to the ground wet. We were going lower just to try and get them lifted and ended up hitting a stone which caused €7,000 worth of damage to the head of the combine.
