• Expansion.
  • Changing enterprise.
  • Stepping back.
  • This is a good time of the year to look at your options and discuss plans with family members.

There are several opportunities out there for young skilled farmers who want to farm, whether they own land or not.

For a farmer who wants to take a step back, there are also a number of potential options.

Consideration must always be given to:

  • 1. Financial security.
  • 2. Are sufficient management skills and labour available?
  • 3. What type of arrangement suits best?
  • 4. Is everything fitting in with the grand plan?
  • Solutions include

  • Arrangements that work very well within the family include a family farm partnership, which allows both the younger and older generations be actively involved in the farm. These can be tax efficient, and facilitate access to EU supports.
  • Where opportunities are not yet available within the family, the young person could explore other opportunities and arrangements in the meantime, allowing them to independently develop their farming career.
  • Benefits

This can lead to enormous longer-term benefits:

  • Long-term leasing is very tax efficient and when the right person is found, it can work very well for both farmer and landowner.
  • Share-farming or other partnership arrangements can be the perfect solution to finding a system that works for everyone.
  • Contract-rearing and contract production arrangements are another option.
