A Donegal man charged with the theft of livestock from a farm near Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath, last summer will go to trial in the Circuit Court in Tullamore next month.

Barry Carr (31), with an address at Boeshill, Pettigo, Co Donegal, appeared before Judge Seamus Hughes in the District Court in Athlone on 21 September, where he was formally presented with a book of evidence and issued a trial date.

Mr Carr is charged with two counts of Section 4 theft, that on the night of 24 to 25 June last year he allegedly took livestock worth a total of €107,300 from the farm of Niall and Christa Dillon at Cornaher, Co Westmeath.

Mr Carr, who did not speak at his hearing and who pleaded not guilty at a previous appearance, was represented by Martina Moran, who applied for legal aid.

Judge Hughes noted Mr Carr was “on bail with substantial conditions”, and Ms Moran sought that these be maintained up to his trial.

These include that the defendant reside at the given address in Pettigo, sign on once a week at his local Garda station, give an undertaking not to travel to Westmeath, provide an independent surety of €10,000, and a €500 personal bond. Mr Carr was originally arrested last October, and initially charged in June.
