The average 350kg bull is currently making around €2.50/kg or €875/head. Average prices are running over €100 more than the same time last year. Demand for lighter weanlings continues to be very brisk and the average 250kg bull is making €2.68/kg or €670/head as a result. The average 350kg heifer is selling for €2.59/kg or €905/head.

Farmers have been active bidders for heifers, while there has been continued activity from northern buyers for weanling bulls in some places, with buyers looking to take advantage of the euro-sterling differential.

Calf prices easing slowly

After a strong few weeks, the calf trade would appear to be showing signs of slowing, although demand varies depending on the mart. The average Friesian bull made €110 in the past week, with stronger calves selling with ease from €120 to €150. Shipper activity continues to increase and prices are averaging from €80 to €90 for light calves. Angus and Herefords are making from €230 to €305.
