One hundred-and-fifty apprentices are to be recruited throughout Ireland for the motor industry. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) announced the news at the Intreo Careers Fair in Dublin Castle last week.

The apprenticeships include motor mechanics, heavy vehicle mechanics, vehicle body repairs, agricultural mechanics and construction plant fitting.

The four-year training programme is overseen by Government agency SOLAS. A participant will be awarded a National Craft Certificate Standard on completion.

In order to undertake an apprenticeship, a candidate must find a suitable employer to take them on for the duration of the programme. They then register with SOLAS.

SIMI’s member companies have committed to recruiting 150 apprentices. Details of the positions are available on their website.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for those who wish to pursue a technical career, while experiencing both college and a working environment,” said Brian Cooke, SIMI director general designate.
