Cashel Mart in Co Tipperary hosted its weanling show and sale over the weekend, with strong numbers meeting a very good trade.

Due to the mart location, many of these weanlings would be fed calves from the dairy herd.

Auctioneer Rory Doyle said: “We used to have a lot more continental stock, but with the way things are gone in this part of the country, Saturday’s sale was about 60% dairy stock, 40% suckler stock.

“These were mostly spring calves, with a small share of autumn also in the mix.”

While back slightly, these reared calves were met with a very strong trade, with €2/kg or higher easily achievable for calves sired by a Hereford or Angus.

This price rose past €2.30/kg for continental-sired dairy beef.

Beef weanlings

However, as expected it was the full beef weanlings which dominated the top prices.

Particular interest was again shown for lighter weanlings, with those over the 450kg mark harder sold.

Leading the prices was the pre-sale show female champion.
