91st Mohill Show set to host all-Ireland Aberdeen Angus championships

The Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys TD officially launched the 2018 Aberdeen-Angus championships at Lough Rynn Castle in Co Leitrim recently.

The annual competition, which is once again sponsored by the veterinary pharmaceutical company Univet, will take place at Mohill Show this Sunday 19 August.

The very best Aberdeen Angus cattle in the country will compete across 17 different classes for the top junior and senior championship titles of the day, with two new classes added to the show schedule for 2018.

New sale for sheep breeders

This year brings a new option for the sheep farmer in the form of the big boy ram sale at the Showgrounds, Carrick on Shannon, this Friday 17 August at 6.30pm.

The concept of the sale was contrived by a number of young pedigree ram breeders, who observed the massive success of two multibreed sales in the United Kingdom.

Sales of this sort offer sheep breeders a useful place to source both a choice of breeds as well as buy a number of rams from one flock, which can be let out in groups and conveniently avoiding conflict between rams.

The big boy ram sale will offer 64 rams featuring aged rams, shearling rams and ram lambs consisting of seven breeds; Texel, Charollais, Beltex, Vendéen, Rouge, Blue Texel and Chartex.

There will be no show on the evening, letting the buyer pick their own champion on the night.
