AFBI Hillsborough are no longer offering their analytical service to test silage samples for feed value. Both commercial feed companies, and farmers who use the service, have been notified of these changes which came into effect from 31 August.

However, if AFBI receives a forage sample after 1 September, they have informed clients that they will carry out a final fodder analysis on a once off basis. But this test comes at a much higher price of £25, almost double the previous testing rate.

For those farmers looking to get an independent feed analysis for grass silage, one option is to use an accredited lab which is part of the UK Forage Analysis Assurance group (FAA). The group collectively analyse over 50,000 forage samples annually using the same sampling methods as AFBI.

The Royal Ulster Agricultural Society (RUAS) is set to hold the Royal Ulster Premier Beef and Lamb Championships on Tuesday 27 November.

Taking place at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, the event is being sponsored by Bank of Ireland and will incorporate the highly successful Allams fatstock show and sale.

All livestock entered for competition will be sold at an evening auction. There will be a competition for young handlers in both cattle and sheep, as well as various trade stands.

Admission is £5 for adults, and under 12s are free when accompanied by an adult. YFCU members £2.50, and RUAS members enter free of charge. All tickets are to be purchased on arrival at the event.
