It may be almost three years late but the draft report of the Forest Policy Review Group has finally been made available for public consultation. Entitled Forests, Products and People: Ireland’s Forest Policy – A Renewed Vision, it is a comprehensive document and is worthy of a wide response from stakeholders during the consultation period which ends this month.

Few industries have a higher degree of interdependency than forestry and the review acknowledges the various links and sectors within the forest industry chain and how they interact. The roles of the various stakeholders are fully examined including private and public sector involvement while functions are assessed including Coillte’s role, However, the absence of a review of the State-owned company diminishes the overall significance of the review (see panel).
