Tim Hortons, one of the largest restaurant chains in the world, announced last week it had removed fake meat products from its menu at nearly 4,000 outlets because of weak consumer demand.
The Canadian restaurant chain said it would no longer offer customers the option of breakfast sandwiches containing plant-based sausage patties or plant-based burger patties, which are made by California plant-based company Beyond Meat.
“We may offer plant-based alternatives again in the future, but we have removed it from the menu for now. The product was not embraced by our guests as we thought it would be,” said Tim Hortons.
Shares in Beyond Meat plunged as much as 16% following the announcement.
However, it was not all bad news for the California-based company as KFC, the world’s second largest fast food chain, is expanding its trial of plant-based fried chicken to additional restaurants in North Carolina and Tennessee. KFC has been trialling plant-based alternatives to chicken since last year.
