DEAR SIR: Having attended the Energy in Agriculture Open Day in Gurteen College we headed back to the sunny southeast loaded down with information on the latest technology in bio-mass, bio-gas, bio-solids, solar, wind etc.

On the scenic route home we crossed a bridge with a historic building beside it and an inscribed stone which informed us that Carlow was the first town in Ireland to have its street lighting fully powered by hydroelectric power (a renewable) in 1891!

For the remainder of the journey home I spent my time trying to decide whether the open day was a case of “Back to the Future” or, “Forward to the Past”.
