Agri-chemical manufacturer Bayer Crop Science will pay farmer to sequester carbon in their soils, through the use of climate-smart initiatives in 2020/2021.

Designed to help agriculture reduce its carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions, the Bayer Carbon Initiative will incentivise farmers to generate carbon credits, which will be purchased by the agri-chemical company.

Measures to sequester carbon include establishing crops through no-till practices and the use of cover crops.

The programme’s 2020/2021 season will include approximately 1,200 farmers in Brazil and the US.

Bayer plans to expand the programme to other farmers in the US and Brazil and then later into other regions across the world, with tailored approaches.
