Beef calf registrations dropped to 7,048 for the first week of January, according to the ICBF, and marked a 2,261 decrease compared to the same period in 2017.

The number of pedigree birth registrations also decreased by 247 to 1,184, while dairy calf registrations fell by 509 to a total of 5,571.

In total, the number of calf registrations dropped by 18% to 12,619.

However, speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, the ICBF pointed out that farmers have 28 days to register a calf and it expects figures to increase by the end of this month.
