For predominantly March- and April-calving suckler herds, it's important to make sure you are on top of all routine tasks such as de-horning and clostridial vaccines for this year’s calves.

Where calves have yet to be de-horned, now is a good time to do so whilst buds are still small and more manageable.

Make sure calves are properly restrained in a purpose-built crate and have been given an anaesthetic. Make sure the de-budding iron is piping hot before each use.

Clip the hair from each bud before using the iron. Once the bud has been removed, treat the open cavity with an antiseptic spray.

Vaccines

Calves should also be vaccinated against clostridial diseases on farms with a history of such problems. Follow the guidelines for the vaccine properly.

There may be benefits to vaccinating for pneumonia and IBR on farms where animals regularly experience respiratory problems. Consult with your vet to develop a health plan for your herd.

Castration

On farms that castrate male calves, the earlier this is carried out the better as it reduces stress on calves. Early castration will minimise any loss in weight gain.
