The Belgian Blue bull calf, Boherard James Bond, (pictured above) exhibited by David Pearson, Ballacolla, Co Laois, won the supreme interbreed junior calf championship at the Ossory Show over the weekend. This was the biggest pedigree championship on offer at the show and boasted an entry of over 20 top young calves across all major beef breeds. The champion calf was born in September 2015 and is sired by Or and is out of Boherard Hunky Dory.

Martin Ryan and family, Copperfield House, Cabra, Thurles, Co Tipperary, took the overall championship in the Charolais ring with the senior cow Goldstar Elle. This cow was the supreme Charolais champion at Tullamore Show last August and is sired by the AI bull Caramel. The Ryan family also took the reserve inter-breed junior champion spot with their Charolais heifer calf, Goldstar Lavendar.

Wayne Mulligan, Rathfeston, Geashill, Co Offaly, won the reserve Charolais breed championship with his bull calf Rathfeston Larry.

The Simmental championship was won by Garrett Behan, Portlaoise, Co Laois, with a homebred senior cow.

Owen Hester from Castlerea, Co Roscommon, clinched the supreme Limousin championship with the junior cow Meelickaduff Honda. This cow has notched up several championship and interbreed titles in recent weeks and was shown with an autumn-born bull calf at foot.

Donal Moloney, Ardnacrusha, Co Clare, took the reserve champion prize in the Limousin section with the young heifer calf Ardnacrusha KitKat.

The Shorthorn championship was won by James Muldowney, Glenmacolla, Cullahill, Co Laois, with Ballylehaun Snowdrop.

Conor Murphy, Tullow, Co Carlow, received the reserve championship rosette with the senior cow Ardclay Ruby.

A double win for the Dudleys

The Dudley family completed a rare double winning both overall championships in the Hereford and Aberdeen Angus sections. Trevor Dudley, Kilsunny Hse, Dovea, Thurles, Co Tipperary, took home the Hereford championship with Kilsunny Lass Lily. This yearling heifer was born in October 2014 and is sired by Glaslough Judge, who himself has won several championships this summer.

Tom Brennan, Freshford, Co Kilkenny, took the reserve Hereford championship with the bull calf Balleen Perfection.

In the Aberdeen Angus section, Edward Dudley from Dovea, Thurles, Co Tipperary, won the overall championship with the first-calved junior cow Castlelough Mystic Buffy N133. Buffy has been a profilic winner at the summer shows over the last two seasons and was shown with a prize-winning spring-born heifer calf at foot.

Jim Dockery, Shinrone, Co Offaly, won the reserve Aberdeen Angus championship with the young heifer calf Towra Millie.

Dairy results

In the dairy section, the famed show cow Evergreen Duplex Ebony EX95 2E exhibited by Liam and Sandra Murphy, Fenagh, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow, took the overall championship title. This senior cow, fresh on her fifth lactation, was the supreme Holstein Friesian champion at Tullamore Show and the Royal Ulster Winter Fair last year. She is sired by Mesland Duplex and has completed yields in excess of 12,000kg of milk.

Standing in the reserve championship spot in the dairy section was Clonpaddin WRN Rose, exhibited by Kevin Behan, Banaghmore, Rathangan, Co Kildare.

There was an outstanding entry in the commercial section with several championship and finals taking place on the day. The overall commercial championship was won by Derek Forde, Cahermorris, Corndulla, Co Galway with a two-year-old Limousin X heifer. This heifer was also the commercial champion at Mullingar Show last weekend.
