The Irish Blue Texel Sheep Society held its second annual sale on Saturday 29 August at the show grounds in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Selected as judge was renowned Belclare and Charolais breeder Declan Miley. After much deliberation, he awarded his male championship rosette to John Walsh from Co Donegal for his ram lamb Limestone Elton.

This stylish young lamb continued to stand out for judge Miley who later tapped him out as supreme champion.

Sired by Cooraclevin Doubleoseven, who was purchased at last year’s premier, he is out of a homebred ewe by Powerful 609. This young ram later sold for €580.

This topped a very good day for Mr Walsh, who sold five ewe lambs to average €826, selling to a top of €1,000.

Reserve supreme championship went to James Higgins with Hurricane Egypt. Having placed first in the March ewe lamb class, Egypt went on to take overall female championship before standing in as reserve supreme.

This daughter of Cleenagh Disneyland, purchased in the North in 2019, is out of a Dutch imported ewe. With strong demand for females, she topped the overall sale when sold for €1,200. A further two ewe lambs from the Hurricane flock sold for €800 and €760 respectively.

Mr Higgins also claimed the reserve male champion with a ram lamb from his Hurricane flock. Having failed to meet his reserve, he left the ring unsold.

Taking the reserve female championship was Johnstown 1507 from Francis and Jennifer Donohoe from Collinstown in Co Westmeath. This first-prizewinning shearling ewe was sired by Powerful Bigbang and out of a homebred ewe.

She sold later in the day for €700, with a further two ewe lambs from the same flock selling for €760 and €700.

On the day, males made a steady commercial demand without breaking any records. Females were a different story, with ewe lambs freely making between €700 and €1,000, with demand outstripping supply.
