Five slaughterhouses were given the green light to begin exporting to the US again this week.

The first shipments are expected back in the US in October.

The Brazilian minister for agriculture, Blairo Maggi, said that a recent US technical mission came to Brazil to inspect slaughterhouses.

While in Brazil, the US delegation visited several plants and talked to ministry technicians and people in the production chain.

Banned

In late June, the US banned all imports of Brazilian beef and at the time the USDA said the ban would remain in place until Brazil took corrective action to bring food safety stands for beef up to a certain standard.

The USDA said it has been inspecting 100% of all Brazilian beef imports since March, when a year-long investigation by Brazilian authorities known as 'Operation Weak Flesh' revealed rotten or tainted meat was being sold by factories after bribes were paid to customs officials.

However, in that time, the USDA had rejected 106 lots of Brazilian beef, which came to a combined 862t, on public health concerns, sanitary conditions, and animal health issues.
