According to the IFA, pig prices in Germany rose by 4c/kg this week.

The IFA stated that there is “increased demand from China due to restrictions on Brazilian pork”.

China and Hong Kong as well as other nations such as Japan, Canada and Australia have implemented restrictions and increased inspections and controls on Brazilian meat.

The Irish Farmers Journal in its front-page story this week stated that farmers in Ireland are hopeful that the scandal in Brazil would be of benefit here.

China is a vast importer of pigmeat with one container load of pigmeat leaving ever hour from Denmark to China.

China imported some 1.6m tonnes of pork and pigmeat in 2016.
