Breeding for profit will be the theme on the Salers stand at this year’s National Ploughing Championships. This major event has always provided a wonderful platform for people to talk to breeders and discuss bloodlines and the merits of the breed.

Information on the maternal and terminal values of the Salers breed will be available to suckler farmers.

Selection of cattle

This year’s stand will feature a selection of pedigree cattle, including a number of locally-bred animals as well as prizewinners from the summer shows.

To add to these, there will also be a display of crossbred cows and calves. This has always been a big attraction on the Salers stand as it helps farmers to see firsthand how the breed can be used in their own herds.

Council members will be there each day to help answer any questions.

There will also be plenty of information on the new BDGP scheme and how the Salers breed can help farmers to meet their requirements.

RAFFLE

A raffle will take place on the final day for a pedigree Salers heifer valued at €1,500. This would make a great starting point for any new breeder or a valued addition to any established herd. Tickets cost €2 each, or three tickets for €5 and will be available on the stand over the three days.

The Salers National Calf Championship will take place at Tullamore on 14 November.

The annual pedigree Salers Show and Sale is also scheduled for Tullamore on Saturday 14 November. The Society hopes to build on the success of last year’s sale where there was a strong demand for quality cattle from both Irish and UK buyers.

The Society will also hold its annual crossbred sale in Gort mart on 29 October which always attracts a notable number of top quality breeding females.
