Fianna Fáil has expressed concern that the Customs Bill, passed last night in the House of Commons, will not provide the option of a backstop arrangement between Northern Ireland and the Republic.

Speaking on RTÉ, the Fianna Fáil spokesperson for Brexit Lisa Chambers said: “This amendment effectively precludes the backstop.”

The UK is Ireland’s most important trading partner and counts as our primary beef market.

The bill passed by just three votes in Westminster, with members of the Prime Minister’s Conservative party rebelling and voting against amendments to the bill.

The dissension within the ranks of the ruling party is a cause of concern for both Ireland and the EU, with less than nine months remaining before the official exit of the UK from the EU.
