Some 3,000 drivers have requested insurance green cards from FBD, the insurer has confirmed.

Farmers and contractors will be required to hold a separate green card for every agricultural vehicle which crosses the border into Northern Ireland in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Most green card requests have come from border counties.

A separate green card will be required for each agricultural vehicle including tractors, combines, sprayers and self-propelled forage harvesters. Vehicle implements are not required to have a green card.

Donegal-based potato grower Kevin Harkin’s business straddles the border of Donegal and Derry. He received a green card for all his machines automatically from his insurer, Aviva.

“We were going to look into getting them but, before we did, Aviva automatically sent us out green cards,” he said.

“They sent us a green card for everything – tractors, combines, potato harvesters, even our forklifts which remain in the yard.”
