Morrisons and its supplier Arla have announced that the retailer’s ‘Milk for Farmers’ range will now come from a dedicated pool of around 50 British farmers.

The segregated group of farms will produce to a higher welfare standard as well as guaranteeing that their cows are grazed for 120 days a year.

The extra 10p/l paid by customers will be shared among all the farmers (around 300) in the Dedicated Morrisons Dairy Group.

However, while this may bring in extra money to producers, NFU Scotland vice president Gary Mitchell said: “The co-op philosophy is weakened by differential pricing; choosing which members of the co-op qualify for the aligned contract and whether location is a factor in who does and who doesn’t qualify.”
