Calf birth registrations to 8 February 2019 are 41,000 head behind the same period for 2018. Total calf birth registrations to date this year are almost 202,000 head.

Just over three-quarters of the calves registered so far this year are from the dairy herd. But dairy registrations are 33,200 head less than where they were this time last year.

Beef registrations are 7,780 lower to date this year, compared to 2018 figures.

This week

In the week ending 8 February, 90,450 calf births were registered in total. This compares to 108,732 registrations in the same week last year.

In the dairy herd, there were 79,436 registrations this week, almost 15,000 less than the same week in 2018.

Meanwhile, in beef, just over 11,000 calves were registered this week, almost 3,500 less than the same week last year.
