Calf sales are just starting to get going, with the main supply of calves set to pass through mart rings in late February and early March.

While prices of continental cattle and traditional breeds have started strong, Friesian bull calves are a mixed trade, with the average bull selling for just €74/head last week.

Mart managers have said that prices of Friesian bulls are ranging mainly from €60 to €80 per head, with very few edging towards the €100/head mark.

Angus heifers are selling at similar levels so far to the same time last year, with prices ranging from €150 to €190/head and averaging at €180/head. The strongest demand is for stronger aged calves.

Herefords are selling from €160 to €240/head.
