Calf numbers are now in freefall in marts across the country. The ICBF recorded just 1,200 sales in the past week, with the majority of those on offer being strong three- to four-week-olds.

Friesian bull numbers are minimal and prices are ranging mainly from €100 to €130/head.

The majority of calf sales recorded were Angus and Herefords and numbers of these have remained steady. The average Angus heifer is making just over €125/head, while bulls are selling for closer to €170/head. Herefords are a stronger trade, with heifers selling for €140 to €150/head for average-quality types and for €195/head for bull calves. Demand for continental calves remains firm, with suckler farmers and specialist rearers the main source of demand.
