The Rearing To Go campaign is being launched at Corrin Mart in Fermoy, Co Cork, this Wednesday to seek calf donations ahead of a spring sale in aid of mental health awareness.

Organisers Angela Hayes of the Thomas Hayes Trust, rugby star David Corkery, and farmers Paula and Peter Hynes will ask farmers to donate a dairy-bred heifer calf to the sale, which will be held at Corrin mart on 2 March 2019 with celebrity auctioneers.

Smaller herds without surplus heifers are welcome to donate dairy-beef cross calves. Each farmer who donates a calf will receive a bag of of Volac Heiferlac and a bag of Dairygold Calf pride nuts from the campaign's sponsors, which also include Cork Marts. The highest genetic merit calf and the one achieving the top price will receive prizes on the day.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing, and to raise funds for the Thomas Hayes Foundation's Teac Tom counselling service started by Angela after two suicides affected her family.

Kilkenny truck and tractor run

Teac Tom was also among the charities to be supported with €13,000 from last year's Light Up the Night truck and tractor run in Ballyraget, Co Kilkenny. The event returns this New Year's Eve and will again be in aid of organisations promoting mental health and suicide prevention locally and beyond.

Farmers and hauliers can join through the Light Up the Night Facebook page.
