Carrigallen’s general cattle and sheep sale on Monday also included an entry of in-calf heifers on the point of calving.

The heifers were mainly Limousin-crosses born in spring 2016, with manager Helen Kells reporting a relatively firm trade.

The average price for 15 heifers sold was €1,826, with prices ranging from €1,630 to a top of €2,120, with three lots exceeding the €2,000 mark.

The main entry comprised mainly dry cows. Heavy slaughter-fit continental cows weighing 650kg to 780kg sold from €1.60/kg to €1.70/kg on average, with a few excellent-quality cows selling from €1.75/kg to €1.84/kg. Feeding and lesser-quality suckler-bred cows sold from €1.20/kg to €1.45/kg. Friesian cows sold from €1/kg to €1.26/kg for lots carrying a reasonable cover of flesh.

An entry of a dozen heifers sold from €1.67/kg to €1.90/kg for plainer-quality traditional and dairy-crossbred lots, with best prices rising to €2.00/kg to €2.25/kg.

The sheep trade was steady with lambs weighing 48kg upwards selling from €110 to €117 per head, while store lambs weighing 35kg to 38kg sold from €75 for crossbreds to €90 for tight-wooled lambs. Dry ewes sold from €80 to €115 for fleshed lots.
