The release of CAO points on Friday has attracted even closer attention than normal, given the manner in which Leaving Cert students were assessed and awarded points.

The procedure used led to an increase in the average points awarded, which in turn led to an increase in CAO points offers for over two-thirds of level 8 degree courses.

The increase was marginally lower for level 6 and level 7 courses, but was still in excess of 60%.

Agriculture, veterinary medicine and food-related courses followed the national trend, as can be seen in Tables 1 and 2 below.

Trends

These tables also show how 2020 points relate to courses, where applicable, over a five-year period.

Over 50% of level 8 students are reported as being offered their first preference, which is a reduction of about 1% on 2019.

Some 80% of level 8 offers are said to be among students' top three preferences, which is a similar reduction of about 1% on 2019.
