Michael Martin from Moate, Co Westmeath, brought home the top rosette from the commercial ring at the show. He went on to snatch the interbreed title also with his well-known heifer, Chancy Lady. His 29-month-old winner was sired by Ampertaine Foreman and out of a pedigree Belgian Blue cow.

A talented young handler, Sarah Murray, guided the animal with great care. Chancy Lady has proved a phenomenal success during the 2017 showing season; entering 13 shows, winning 13 champion commercial titles and a total of six interbreed titles.

Gerry Fee was second with his beef bullock from the Drumlea commercials herd. The reserve commercial champion was sired by a stock bull and came from a Belgian Blue cow. Fee travelled from Carrigallen, Co Leitrim, to take the honours. Cian Connolly accompanied Gerry on the day.

Aberdeen Angus

John McEnroe travelled home to Liss Bungulow, Oldcastle, Co Meath, a happy man last Sunday as he claimed the champion and reserve champion place in the Aberdeen Angus section of the Royal Meath Show.

The McEnroe family secured the top place on the day as John McEnroe’s cow and calf at foot impressed the judge the most. The winning cow was sired by Mogeely Lord Harrow and the dam was Liss Miylo 710.

The Aberdeen Angus winner was the interbreed champion animal at the Oldcastle Show, breed champion at Iverk Show and snatched the Angus reserve senior female rosette at the Tullamore Show.

Reserve champion in this section at the Royal Meath Show also went to McEnroe. This time around, it was his herd’s heifer that gave him a photo opportunity. Sired by HF Rebel 53Y, the reserve champion had Liss Duchess D573 as its dam.

Charolais

Basil and Victoria Kells of Bohora, Killeshanda, Co Cavan, saw red in the Charolais ring for their pedigree bull born in October 2016. Dale Hill Bacbeth was the name of the winner and he was sired by Cavelands Fenian.

Hereford

The Smith cup was awarded to the champion Hereford animal. Sean McKiernan from Corlismore House, Corlismore, Co Cavan, won the cup for his pedigree Hereford bull.

The Shiloh farm bull had the name; Shiloh Dynamite and it was born on 1 February 2016. Sired by Grianan Freddy the winner had the dam Cillcormac Las.

Limousin

Roundhill Limousins secured the top prize in the Limousin ring of the Royal Meath Show. Tim Corridan from Castoequarter House, Fedamore, Co Limerick, made a worthwhile journey with his Roundhill Iangel 1700 Limousin heifer.

Gareth McGuinness snatched up the reserve champion place with his Limousin heifer in calf. From number one Lagavoreen Manor, Beamore Road, Drogheda, McGuinness’s winner was called Limestone Kahlua, and was sired by Wilodge Tonka.

Belgian Blue

Melvin Masterson from Enniscorthy, Co Wexford, had the deciding view in the Belgian Blue ring. He put George Hegarty from Dublin Rd, Longford, Co Longford, in top place with his female calf Mack Lady. The winner was out of Bohhhn Cantana and sired by Mack Flake.

Paul Burke was placed with the reserve champion title for his female Belgian Blue born March 2016. Burke, from Clonbren, Bracknash, Rathaugan, Co Offaly, named his animal Tyber Knight.

Simmental

Sarah and Hugh Murray impressed the judge in the Simmental ring. The Murrays, from Parkwood, Moate, Co Westmeath, saw red with their Shilo Hot Rod Simmental bull. This male, born after 1 September 2016, was sired by Kilbride Farm Bantry and out of Raceview Bounty.

Coming in second was also the Murrays, this time with their bull calf. The second-place animal, Shiloh Jackpot had the dam Glen Cait and the sire Kilbride Farm Delboy. This Simmental also claimed big at the Oldcastle Show earlier on this year.

Shorthorn

Michael Foley, Crossdrum, Oldcastle, Co Meath, claimed the top spot in the Shorthorn arena. His Shorthorn heifer, from Foley’s Crossdrum Shorthorn herd, had the sire Violet Crosstown.

Rare breeds

The winner of the Bannow Rathangan Show Irish Moiled section claimed the number one spot in the rare breeds ring at the Royal Show. Alan Mooney, Kilcock, Co Kildare, saw red with his cow and calf at foot called Glassdrummond Lily. The winner had Glassdrummond Lily 23 as its dam and Hillview Tom as its sire.

The smallest cow in the world, Ella, and calf Martha came in second. The Dexter cow and calf owned by Henry Judge, was from Dromone, Co Sligo.
